My mother had 3 mini strokes 2 weeks ago. Today I was talking to her and she started to have slurred speech and became incoherent. This has never been one of her symptoms, even after the 3 mini strokes 2 weeks ago. A few minutes later she seemed to be ok. However, I was advised by the hospital to bring her into the ER if she started to show these type of symptoms. To be on the safe side I decided to bring her into the ER. My Mother said she felt fine and didn't want to go but I convinced her to go anyway.

When we arrived I spoke to the people at the check-in counter and explained what happened. My Mom told them that she felt fine and didn't think anything was wrong. I told the man that she just had 3 mini strokes 2 weeks ago and I didn't think that she was of sound mind and I'd still like to have her checked out. He very abruptly told me that I can't force her to be treated if she didn't want to. Then a woman came up and asked my mom what the year was and who the president was. When my mom answered correctly the woman said that she seemed fine to her and reiterated that I couldn't force her. I asked them to please explain to my mom that the symptoms she had could be pointing to a serious problem, but they didn't. Then they just said that we should just go discuss the issue on our own.

I am very upset that they couldn't even advise her how serious the issue could be. Especially after expressing my concern that she wasn't thinking clearly. I felt as though they just wanted to get us out the door asap and move on to the next person. I know it's not their responsibility to convince people that they need medical treatment. But they wouldn't even humor me or offer to check her check her vitals at the very least.

Where's the compassion and desire to actually help people who could be in serious danger? I am so disappointed! I will never come back to this hospital again!
